AI Privacy Basics: What to Check Before Sharing Information

Practical AI guide · Editorial content

Before putting information into an AI service, pause and consider whether the material contains information you are allowed and willing to share.

Remove unnecessary personal information

If a task can be completed without names, phone numbers, addresses, account identifiers or other sensitive details, remove them.

Check workplace rules

Employers may have policies about confidential documents, customer information or internal data. Those rules matter even when a task seems harmless.

Understand the service

Different AI products have different settings, retention practices and terms. Read the provider's current privacy information before using sensitive material.

Use examples when possible

If you are testing a prompt, replace real customer or business information with fictional examples.

AI can be useful without receiving every detail. A good privacy habit is to share the minimum information necessary for the task.
