7 Common AI Prompt Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Practical AI guide · Editorial content

Many disappointing AI results are caused by underspecified prompts rather than a lack of model capability.

1. No clear task

“Help me with this” leaves too much open. State the action you want.

2. Missing audience

The right answer depends on who will read it.

3. No output format

If you need a table, checklist or short paragraph, say so.

4. Too much irrelevant context

More text is not automatically better. Include information that changes the answer.

5. Hidden constraints

Mention deadlines, word limits, required sections and forbidden assumptions.

6. Asking for certainty

AI can sound confident even when information is missing. Tell it to flag uncertainty.

7. No review step

Important outputs should be checked before they are used.

A good prompt is usually clearer, not necessarily longer. Focus on task, context, output, constraints and verification.
